Should Kantians Be Consequentialists?

چکیده

Parfit argues that a form of rule consequentialism can be derived from the most plausible formulation of the fundamental principle of Kantian ethics. And so he concludes that Kantians should be consequentialists. I argue that we have good reason to reject two of the auxiliary premises that figure in Parfit’s derivation of rule consequentialism from Kantianism. In chapter 16 of On What Matters, Parfit argues that the most plausible form of consequentialism, namely Universal Acceptance Rule Consequentialism (UARC): Everyone ought to follow the principles whose universal acceptance would make things go best. follows from the most plausible form of Kantianism, namely Kantian Contractualism (KC): Everyone ought to follow the principles whose universal acceptance everyone could rationally will. Parfit summarizes his argument as follows: (KC) Everyone ought to follow the principles whose universal acceptance everyone could rationally will. (C) "ere are some principles whose universal acceptance would make things go best. (F) Everyone could rationally will that everyone accepts these principles. (H) "ese are the only principles whose universal acceptance everyone could rationally will.

Separate spheres and indirect benefits

On any plausible account of the basis for health care resource prioritization, the benefits and costs of different alternative resource uses are relevant considerations in the prioritization process. Consequentialists hold that the maximization of benefits with available resources is the only relevant consideration. Non-consequentialists do not reject the relevance of consequences of benefits a...

On the fairness of random procedures

We consider procedures that use randomness to make a decision that involves several individuals. We asked subjects to compare the fairness of six pairs of seemingly equivalent procedures. We propose a classification of subjects into two categories: those who are “emotional” in the sense that they exhibit a systematic ranking of procedures on the basis of intuitive notions of fairness, and those...

Business Ethics and the Quality of Life

For a moral consequentialist, the connection between business ethics and quality of life is very close and direct. In general, moral philosophers may be divided into two very broad groups: deontologists and consequentialists. Deontologists hold that some human actions are inherently morally good or evil—for example, murder is inherently bad, whereas telling the truth is inherently good. Consequ...

A Defence of Epistemic Consequentialism

Epistemic consequentialists maintain that the epistemically right (e.g. the justified) is to be understood in terms of conduciveness to the epistemic good (e.g. true belief). Given the wide variety of epistemological approaches that assume some form of epistemic consequentialism, and the controversies surrounding consequentialism in ethics, it is surprising that epistemic consequentialism remai...

Ecological Objects for Environmental Ethics

e emergence of theoretical ecology during the twentieth century advanced our understanding of what kinds of things might exist in our world. In particular, it suggested that objects like “ecological communities” and “ecosystems” might exist. In developing those ideas, ecology offered a new set of things we might care about or care for, and that development has both stimulated and challenged en...
